New tax law extends tax breaks

The American Taxpayer Relief Act extends several popular tax breaks, some through 2013 and others permanently. Included are the optional deduction for state and local sales tax, the adoption credit, the child tax and child care credits, enhancements to the earned income credit, and the teachers’ deduction for classroom expenses.
